Many criminals made the mistake of underestimating Lieutenant Columbo, a homicide investigator with a crumpled trench-coat and a beat-up car, who certainly acted as an incompetent bumbler. But he was so polite to every suspect, and he talked so much about his wife (who we never got to see on any episode, but who many believe later had her own show, starring Kate Mulgrew, later of Star Trek Voyager fame) that he lulled even the shrewdest murderer into a false sense of security. And although the audience had witnessed the murder in the beginning of each episode, it was still a surprise to see what mistakes the killers had made during the seemingly perfect murder.

《神探可伦坡》（Columbo）是一个有名的经典美国电视电影，由彼得·福克（Peter Falk）主演。自1968年~2003年期间，共69集。本片叙述一名总是穿着一件皱巴巴的棕色风衣，顶着一头乱发，嘴里叼雪茄，开着一辆老爷车的洛杉矶重案组的刑警主角法兰克·可伦坡（Frank Columbo）。看似不修边幅的他，总是以敏锐的推理能力侦破各种案件，并让犯人无从抵赖。 本片每集独立成篇，一大特点是每集中客串演出犯人角色的全为名演员与名人。另一特点是剧情采用固定的倒叙推理形式;先描述犯人作案的情形，而后描写可伦坡从与嫌疑犯的交谈及证据中确定其嫌疑，逼得犯人不得不自白。犯人原以为天衣无缝的杀人计划，都逃不过他的锐眼。他的一句名言是：‘世上没有完美犯罪’。 倒叙推理，着重如howcatchem（如何抓住犯人），而不是常见的whodunit（谁是凶手）、howdunit（手法）或whydunit（动机）。因此在日本若出现倒叙推理的作品，往往会被叫成‘神探可伦坡或古畑任三郎风格’。日本著名编剧 三谷幸喜 从小就可伦坡迷，长大后更是创作了’日本版神探可伦坡’－《古畑任三郎》。

The eighth series has been confirmed to air starting on Friday 6 January 2012 on BBC1 at 9pm. However creator Tony Jordan has said that this will be the last for at least a while and the last with the current cast. Guest stars featuring this season will include Sheila Hancock, Martin Kemp and Paterson Joseph.Peter Polycarpou and John Barrowman have also revealed on Twitter that they will have guest roles in series eight. This will be the third series to be filmed in Birmingham, the fifth in HD and the fourth series featuring all of the current cast. Adrian Lester is also set to direct an episode, in which Mickey is kidnapped.Other cons will see the team take on the world of slimming pills and pull off a gold heist. Jaime Murray reprised her role for the final episode.
