故事梗概纽约广播电台音乐节目主持人杰克· 卢卡斯接到一个叫埃德温的人打来的电话，由于他回话不当，诱发埃德温在酒吧向顾客开枪，造成多人伤亡。杰克为此感到自己有罪，从此一撅不振。一日，杰克偶然结识了研究中世纪史的教授、现沦为乞丐的帕里。帕里告诉杰克必须找回耶稣在最后的晚餐使用过的圣杯。他认定这只圣杯藏在亿万富翁兰登· 卡迈克尔的书橱里。杰克把帕里当作疯子打发走了。但是当他了解到帕里的妻子也是埃德温枪弹下的牺牲品，而且帕里由于过分悲痛以致精神错乱进了疯人院时，感到很内疚。他发现帕里正在毫无希望地爱着女秘书莉迪娅。帕里给杰克讲了渔王的神话故事：渔王如何在失去了圣杯之后也失去了他的健康、信仰和爱情。杰克为了赎罪，决心帮助帕里和莉迪娅。他请他们一起吃饭。饭后，帕里送莉迪娅回家，他们第一次接了吻。然而当帕里回到他简陋的小屋时，遭到众无赖一顿毒打，又被送进医院。杰克决心夺回圣杯以解救帕里。他到兰登· 卡迈克尔家找到那只杯子并带着杯子赶到医院。帕里最终从丧妻之痛里挣之出来，恢复了自我意识。他和莉迪娅团聚了。
